But what is it really?
Is it a granny square or a granny triangle?
The half granny square is in fact a triangle and it corresponds to the half diagonal of a classic granny square.
Half granny square triangles are extremely useful when you want to crochet a granny square blanket with the granny squares tilted on their tip. In which case, you’ll want to fill in the gaps at the border by adding these half grannies.
But there is much more that you can do with a half granny square.
For example, you could make a very simple shawl by simply adding as many rows as you need. Or you could use these granny triangles to shape the armholes of granny square sweaters and garments in general.

MATERIALS
- 3.5-mm (E/4 USA, 9 UK) Crochet Hook
- DK (3, Light) Yarn. I usedPaintbox Yarns Cotton DK.
- Tapestry Needle
You can actually use any yarn weight with the appropriate hook size!
CROCHET ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
Ch– Chain
Dc– Double Crochet
MC–Magic Circle
Sl St– Slip Stitch
Sp – Space
St– Stitch
Yo– Yarn over
PATTERN NOTES
- If the pattern says “dc 2”, you have to crochet 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts.
- (…)– Repeat the instruction within parenthesis for the indicated number of times.
- […]– Crochet the instructions within brackets into the same indicated st or sp.
Single Color – Half GRANNY SQUARE triangle – TUTORIAL
Row 1
- Step 1. Make a MC and ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp).
Alternatively, if you don’t like the MC, you can ch 5 and crochet all the next sts into the first-made ch! - Step 2. In the MC, dc 3, ch 2, dc 3, ch 1, dc 1.
- Step 3. Tighten the MC.
Row 2
- Step 1. Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp) and turn your work. Working in the first ch-1 sp, [dc 3], ch 1.
- Step 2. In the next ch-2 sp, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3]. Ch 1, [dc 3] in the last ch-1 sp.
- Step 3. Ch 1 and dc in the third ch of the initial 4 chains from row 1.
Row 3
Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp) and turn. [Dc 3, ch 1] in each ch-1 sp on the first side, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in the ch-2 sp at the tip of the triangle, [ch 1, dc 3] in each ch-1 sp on the second side. Ch 1, dc 1 in the last st (this is the third-made ch of the initial ch-4 from the previous row).
Following Rows
Repeat row 3 to keep growing your half granny square in one single color.
Multiple Color – HALF GRANNY SQUARE TRIANGLE – TUTORIAL
To crochet a half granny square in multiple colors, the pattern is essentially the same as for a granny triangle in one solid color.
However, there is one main advantage to changing color at every single row, and that is that you can always crochet on the right side of your work!
Don’t get me wrong, you could still decide to join the new color with the last yo of a row and go on to crochet the next row on the wrong side. Furthermore, turning your work will still be necessary if your color changes are every two or more rows!
Anyhow, I thought it might interesting to see how to crochet the half granny square n multiple colors by working always on the right side.
Row 1
- Make a MC, and ch 4. In the MC, dc 3, ch 2, dc 3, ch 1, dc 1.
Fasten off and weave in your ends. - Identify the third-made ch of the initial ch-4.
- Hold the new yarn color to the back of the work, and insert your hook under both loops of the third ch.
- Yo with the new yarn color, and draw up a loop.
Row 2
Once you have joined the new color, ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp). [Dc 3, ch 1] in the first ch-1 sp, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in the next ch-2 sp, [ch 1, dc 3] in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc 1 in the last dc.
Row 3 and the following rows
As you did for row 2, join the new color in the third ch of the initial ch-4. Then, repeat the same pattern as for Row 3 of the single-colored half granny.
Keep repeating the same pattern to grow your half granny square triangle.
