FOOD WASTEIn Australia 8.2 milliontonnes of food waste is generated each year, most of which ends up in landfill. Once in landfill, food waste breaks down andemits greenhouse gases, includingnot only carbon dioxide (CO2) but methane (CH4) – a gas25 times more potent than CO2.In fact, the greenhouse gases produced by food waste in Australian landfilleach year is equivalent to the emissions of Australia’ssteel and iron ore industries combined! For example, thecommercial and industrial sector Australia-wide sends approximately 1.5 million tonnes of food waste to landfill each year.AIRPLANE WASTEFlights create millions of tonnes of passenger waste per year, with little recycled. There's been a big focus on the carbon footprint of flying — but have you ever wondered how much rubbish you generate as a passenger on a plane?Key points:·The average person creates 1.4 kilograms of waste per flight, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).·In 2017 there was 5.7 million tonnes of passenger waste, IATA says. This figure includes toilet waste, but the bulk of it is paper, ·cardboard and plastic.·Low cost of plastic makes it the go-to for packaging on board aircraft·"For flights landing in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States, waste is often incinerated because of the risk of transmission of animal diseases.

Food waste is a massive burden for the waste management sector, but more than that it hinders our economic development and destroys our nature. A third of food produced never ends eaten, meaning we throw away $2-3 trillion worth food into the bins. This amount of food uses up to 1.5 billion hectares of farm land, that if it were rewilded could provide a safe habitat for wildlife, animals and plants, but also capture vast amounts of carbon. Reduction in farmland would also reduce leakage of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and erosion derived humus into waterways and thus reduce pollution and eutrophication. And yes, meat is a bigger contributer to climate and biodiversity, so avoiding meat and meat waste will have a quadruple positive impact as 77% of farmland is used for meat production.

When you ask how eliminating household food waste benefits us? If we can only reduce 10% by 2030 and can do that every 5 years imagine the impact it holds considering that household food waste is top of the chart for global food waste generated yearly.1. Environmental impact:- Greenhouse gas reduction: Cutting household food waste by 10% could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8-10 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.- Water savings: This reduction could save around 5-10 billion cubic meters of water per year globally.2. Economic benefits:- Household savings: An average family of four could save about $500-$1,500 per year on groceries.- Global economic impact: A 10% reduction in food waste could lead to economic benefits of $120-$300 billion annually worldwide.3. Food security:- it could potentially provide enough food for about 110-130 million people annually.- This represents roughly 1.3-1.5% of the global population.4. Resource conservation:- Land use: Approximately 5-10 million hectares of land could be saved from agricultural use.- Reduced packaging: About 1-2 million tonnes of plastic packaging could be avoided annually.5. Waste reduction:- Globally, this could mean diverting 25-30 million tonnes of food from landfills and incinerators annually.6. Energy savings:- The energy saved could be equivalent to 8-12 billion kWh, enough to power 750,000 to 1 million homes for a year.

Around £295m of tax revenue is about to be invested in UK food waste collection. That's a good thing, right? Up to a point...the point being that we think around £10/dwelling on average, or say £100m (40% of UK households already have food waste collection and all its plastic and 30% are probably too remote/inaccessible) will be invested into plastic containers; the user will probably need to buy the plastic caddie liners. So what, there's nothing we can do about that is there? Yes, there is...you can choose our sustainable food waste containers instead of increasing the mountain of plastic, waste management already consumes. Why should I? Using our containers will cost you more, anywhere between £0.80-£1.60 per week, naturally depending on use. But, using our containers will avoid the need for bioplastic liners, which deplete land used for food production, whilst enabling you to avoid plastic food caddies which will cause the UK to consume c80,000,000 Litres of oil which could otherwise power c250,000 households. Not using plastic containers will also reduce microplastics, and the release of toxins in general use and when they break or are replaced within their average lifespan of c12 years. Have a look at the plans using the link below and when you have done that, visit Echologika.com to get your sustainable food waste container. Using plastic to contain waste makes no sense. Using our products does.https://lnkd.in/ekVM8aPy

Hey friends, Do you know five types of harmful gases are increasing the heat in the air of Bangladesh? The gas is produced from the smoke of garbage, brick kilns, vehicles and factories. These gases can remain in the air of the city for 10 to 400 years. The five types of gases are carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compounds and ozone. Due to these noxious gases associated with heat waves, the weather has become unbearable. This information is revealed in two recent studies by a group of scientists.Food waste is the major contributor to Greenhouse gas in turn climate change. Many of us don’t realize that wasted food has adverse effects on our environment. Food waste means water waste! Yes, when you waste food, you’re wasting millions of waters too.Waste Food garbage has the highest presence of gas, which is almost 6 times higher than the WHOstandard. Those gases and harmful particles warm the air and increase the toxiccontent. Methane gas is produced mainly from vehicle oil burning, brick kilnsand dumping of garbage. When food is thrown, Methane is released! When food is discarded it goes to the landfills, there it rots to produce Methane- a Greenhouse gas that is 28times much potent than Carbon dioxide. The Methane that is released from food waste hangs around our environment for 12 years and traps most of the heat from Sun. Although methane is short-lived it contributes to 20% of Greenhouse gas emissions. LESS FOOD WASTE MEANS LESS METHANE EMISSIONS INTO THE AIR.I would like to add some more short point that are –◼ Food waste means, fuel waste!◼ Food waste means, Land waste!◼ Food waste harms Biodiversity!I request everyone not to waste food. REMARK: If we divert food waste from landfills to an innovativefood waste treatment systemthen we can stop almost 11% of Greenhouse gas emissions.

The article from the World Economic Forum discusses South Korea's innovative approach to recycling food waste. South Korea has implemented a food waste recycling system that is both effective and highly organized. The country uses a mandatory food waste separation system where residents must separate their food waste into specific bins. This waste is then collected and processed into biogas and compost. The system is enforced through a combination of technology, such as weight-based garbage disposal fees, and public education.### Key Points from the Article:- **Mandatory Separation**: Residents separate food waste into designated bins.- **Weight-Based Fees**: Fees for garbage disposal are based on the weight of waste, incentivizing less waste production.- **Processing**: Food waste is converted into biogas and compost, contributing to energy production and soil enrichment.### Other Examples:1. **Japan**: Japan has a strict waste separation system and emphasizes recycling food waste into compost and animal feed. The country also has food waste reduction initiatives, including awareness campaigns and technology to track food waste.2. **Sweden**: Sweden has a comprehensive food waste management system where food waste is converted into biogas and used for energy. The country promotes food waste reduction through educational programs and policies. These examples highlight global efforts to manage food waste effectively and sustainably. 🌍♻️ #FoodWaste #Recycling #Sustainabilityhttps://lnkd.in/eWzW4YMi

As of 1st January 2024, recycling organic waste has become compulsory in France. Supported by the government's Green Fund, municipalities are required to provide residents with convenient means to separate organic waste. Both households and businesses must responsibly dispose of organic matter either in a designated small container or at a designated municipal collection point. The collected waste will be transformed into biogas or compost, serving as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers.#oganicwaste #recycling #france #sustainabilityRead further: https://lnkd.in/dhD5fSEe

According to WRAP, across the hospitality and food service sector it’s estimated that 800,000 tonnes of food waste was generated in 2021, at a value of £3.21 billion. So it’s obvious why businesses need to be doing more to recycle food waste, but what exactly happens to our food waste currently when it’s not recycled, and how could recycling your food waste benefit your business? Find out in our new blog... 👀 https://lnkd.in/e9tfnBgb#FoodRecycling #FoodWaste #WasteManagement #BusinessWaste #Recycling

My Climate, My ResponsibilityHave you thought about the fact that me and you can do something about the current climate change ?We can actually make a positive contribution by simply managing our waste in our homes and day to day life in an environment friendly mannerDid you know that improper disposal and management of solid waste , particularly in landfills, can produce methane as organic matter decomposes anaerobically. Anaerobic decomposition releases methane, a powerful GHG, open burning of waste materials also releases carbon dioxideWe have in the recent past improperly managed wastes as a people, let's focus on plastics i.e., the plastic bottles, plastic bags (kavera) among others. I have personally seen people throwing plastic bottles through their car windows as they drive on Kampala roads and surrounding areas, it's a common place finding people openly burning plastics and other waste in our communities.I would like to share the following ways through which we can responsibly dispose off these plastics;1. Sort plastics from other forms of waste in our homes and work places.Lets be intentional on not littering our surroundings with plastic bags and bottles after usage . Purpose to keep that specific waste in your car till you reach home and dispose it off responsibly.2. Teach your children the danger of improper solid waste management. You might be shocked when your 5 Year old reports to you friends who littered the school compound with plastics instead of taking it to the bin in the same line schools should put in place specific plastic waste collection bins for better management among others. At a higher level , I would suggest that our Government considers the following interventions ;3. Put in place public plastic collection centers in each ward or Parish. This can encourage collection and disposal of plastic waste from a central place from where it can further be managed 4. Provide incentives to recycling plants in the country as a means of encouraging more investment in this area by both local and foreign investors.5: Put in place Mechanism of introducing and encouraging the use of biodegradable plastics 6: Enhance enforcement of the existing policies and laws on environmental management to mention but a few.Last but not least, Bunyoro Kitara Diocese has done it , I hope this inspires us to keep disposing off plastics in a responsible manner.Kudos Church of Uganda for this incentive

How is Food Waste Recycled?♻️💚Food waste is a significant issue worldwide, but recycling it can turn what would be trash into treasure.1. Collection and Segregation: The first step in food waste recycling is the collection and segregation of organic waste from households, restaurants, and food processing industries. This involves separating food scraps from other types of waste to ensure the recycling process is efficient.2. Composting: Composting is one of the most common methods of recycling food waste. Collected food waste is transported to composting facilities where it is mixed with other organic materials like yard waste.3. Anaerobic Digestion: Anaerobic digestion is another method used to recycle food waste. Food waste is placed in airtight containers called anaerobic digesters, where it is broken down by bacteria in the absence of oxygen.4. Industrial Uses: Certain food waste can be repurposed for industrial uses. Some food waste, particularly from food processing plants, can be converted into animal feed. This reduces the need for traditional feed crops and helps manage waste sustainably.5. Innovative Technologies: Emerging technologies are continuously improving how food waste is recycled. Larvae of the black soldier fly can consume large quantities of food waste, converting it into protein-rich biomass used for animal feed and oils for biofuels.6. Household Initiatives: Individuals can contribute to food waste recycling through setting up a compost bin in the backyard to recycle kitchen scraps into compost for personal use.Follow us at Leverage Fresh Limited for more updates #leveragefreshlimited #vegetables #gardening #agriculture
