Easy Gnocchi in Brown Butter Sage Sauce

Cade here, and today is all about me and this 10-Minute Gnocchi in Brown Butter Sage Sauce. I mean, not really, but gnocchi is my favorite thing ever. In fact, I think when we were in Italy I ordered it at least once a day. Carrian started it, she introduced me to gnocchi by text as we were chatting about what to make for dinner while I was at work.

We are really excited to have teamed up with Walmart to chat about Sam’s Choice Italia Gnocchi and you’re going to love it!

If you don’t already know, gnocchi is my weakness and I’m pretty picky about it as it’s easy to get served poor quality gnocchi. We bought a whole bunch of brands and were pleasantly surprised with the quality and assortment of Sam’s Choice Italia Gnocchi! It’s hand crafted in Italy just for Walmart which means that there’s not only pride in the work, as we know all Italians care greatly about their food, but there’s also attention to detail as the texture is spot on. Plus, it’s all at a great price!

How to Make Sage Butter Gnocchi

This fresh sage and brown butter gnocchi is a cinch to make! Here’s how we make this recipe:

  1. Heat a sauté pan over medium heat with all of the butter in it. Cook for about 5 minutes, at which point the butter should be foaming.

  2. Turn the heat to medium high and continue to whisk or stir the butter so solids don’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Watch the butter continuously as it can suddenly burn.

  3. Meanwhile, fill a saucepan with water and turn the heat to medium high. Once boiling, salt the water and add the gnocchi, giving it a quick stir once it’s in the water. Cook for 1 minute and drain in a colander.

  4. Once it begins to turn amber in color, throw in the gnocchi, sage and stir to combine. Turn the heat to medium and cook until the gnocchi is crisp.

  5. Serve on a platter with a dash of salt and pepper grated parmesan cheese.

FAQ

How to Pronounce Gnocchi

Not to be mean, but many people pronounce it wrong, so to start, it’s pronounced,nyawk-kee. That’s the Italian way at least and since they happen to make a mean Gnocchi I stick with their pronunciation.

Carrian got it right, just so you know. One more reason I really like that girl. 😉

Is Gnocchi Pasta or Potato?

Well, people say it’s a pasta, but it does have potato in it so it’s actually both. It’s made from flour, semolina, egg, potato and all sorts of ingredients to help it taste different.

What’s the Best Sauce for Gnocchi?

Gnocchi is an incredibly versatile dish that you can whip up any kind of sauce for such as, marinara, pepper sauce, pink sauce, alfredo, pesto or even as simple as brown butter like we have here.

How Long to Cook Gnocchi

Gnocchi only needs about 1 minute to cook, however at that point it’s up to you what comes next. You can remove the gnocchi from the water and straight into a sauce, or you can throw the gnocchi into a pan with a little oil or butter and cook until crispy which is our personal favorite.

Can Gnocchi Dough be Refrigerated? The other option is to refrigerate uncooked or cooked gnocchi. Uncooked gnocchi dough can be wrapped in plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to 5 days.

Gnocchi, What Went Wrong?

Why gnocchi fell apart or why gnocchi turned out mushy are some pretty important questions that readers have. If your gnocchi fell apart it’s probably because you overcooked them.

If your gnocchi turned out mushy or grainy, there could be two reasons, the first again being that you overcooked the little dumplings, and the second that you didn’t form a true dough. This is really tricky which is why finding a great store-bought product is the easiest solution.

Are Gnocchi Gluten Free?

Traditionally gnocchi are not gluten free as it’s flour and potato that make up the pasta. However, with so many gluten free needs out there you can find a gluten free option at certain stores.

Tips for Making Gnocchi in Brown Butter Sage Sauce

  • Use unsalted butter so you can control the amount of salt in this dish.
  • I recommend using a light colored skillet so you can clearly see when the butter begins to brown. You don’t want to burn it!
  • If you do wind up burning the butter (oops!), you’ll need to dispose of it, clean the skillet, and try again. Burnt butter is incredibly bitter and can’t be saved.

FAQs

How does Gordon Ramsay cook gnocchi? ›

Bring a large pan of water to the boil. Add the gnocchi, tilting the pan from side to side briefly to stop them sticking together, then simmer for about 1½–2 minutes until they start to float. Drain the gnocchi and leave them to steam-dry for 1–2 minutes. Meanwhile, start to make the sauce.

What makes gnocchi good? ›

You want your gnocchi to be soft, but not soft enough that it compromises the flavor and shape of your pieces! The trick is to use just a little bit of flour without going overboard. The more you can commit to doing that, the better your gnocchi will taste at the end of your cooking venture.

Is gnocchi better with or without egg? ›

Egg yolk added to your gnocchi dough helps improve texture, and keep it together while cooking. Gnocchi is traditionally made with eggs in Veneto and no eggs in Piedmont, the two Northern Italian regions famous for gnocchi. We vote for egg yolks at the rate of 1 per (500g) 1 lb of uncooked potatoes used.

What should you not do when making gnocchi? ›

Try not to knead it as kneading will develop the gluten and make your gnocchi chewy. Keep some flour in a cup for dusting the board and your hands as you work to stop the dough sticking. Cut your dough into 6 pieces and roll them each into fat ropes about as thick as your thumb.

Is gnocchi healthier than pasta? ›

Nutritional Value

Believe it or not, regular pasta is actually more carb-heavy than gnocchi, coming in at around 2 times the amount of carbs per serving. Gnocchi is also notorious for having a lot more sodium, with over 200 grams of it per serving. Regular pasta doesn't have nearly as high of a sodium content.

What do Italians eat gnocchi with? ›

Tomato, pesto (or pesto alfredo), and butter-based sauces are the best components in a delicious Italian gnocchi recipe. All three are commonly found on restaurant menus. Some restaurants may offer gnocchi as part of a soup, salad, or paired with a plate of vegetables as well.

Is gnocchi good or bad for you? ›

Similar to pasta, gnocchi is high in carbohydrates and low in protein. Although both are carbohydrate-heavy foods, it has been shown that regular pasta may have less of an effect on blood sugar levels. One publication points to the fact that pasta doesn't raise blood sugar after a meal to the level that potatoes do.

How is gnocchi supposed to be cooked? ›

Poach gnocchi in batches in a pan of lightly salted water for 2-4 minutes. Cooked gnocchi will float to the top. Strain and serve immediately with a good pasta sauce.

Is it better to bake or boil gnocchi? ›

The secret to the lightest, most tender potato gnocchi is to bake the potatoes instead of boiling them. A baked potato is dryer than one that has been boiled, which means you avoid having to add more flour to the dough to account for excess moisture, a practice that leads to over-kneaded, tough gnocchi.

Can you cook gnocchi in sauce instead of boiling? ›

There is no need to pre-cook the gnocchi. It'll cook in the sauce. The sauce is meant to be quite thick, but if you find it gets too dry before the gnocchi is cooked, add in another splash of chicken broth or wine.

How do you cook pre bought gnocchi? ›

Cook gnocchi:

Bring a large pot water to a boil; add 1 tablespoon salt. Add half of the gnocchi; when they rise to the top (after about 2 minutes), continue to cook until tender, about 15 seconds more.
