1 Identify your hobbies
The first step is to identify your hobbies and how they relate to your professional goals. Think about what you love to do, what you're good at, and what you want to learn more about. For example, if you're a graphic designer who likes to draw comics, you might be interested in joining a local or online community of comic artists, where you can share your work, get feedback, and learn from others. Or if you're an accountant who enjoys hiking, you might want to volunteer for a conservation organization, where you can meet other nature lovers and demonstrate your commitment to environmental causes.

For some people (Ahem, my husband), identifying hobbies is very easy. For others, (Ahem, ME), it is rather difficult. If you want to use hobbies to expand your network, then I recommend finding opportunities for social interactions. Think clubs, sports leagues, or online communities. Pro Tip: Don't forget to actively engage with others in these settings to truly connect with like-minded professionals.

Workshops, industry events, or even starting your own blog related to your interests allows you to stay updated, and showcase your expertise.Instead of: "I enjoy playing chess and reading."Try: "My passion for strategic thinking translates well into my career as a business analyst. I actively participate in chess tournaments and contribute to online chess forums, which allows me to network with professionals in the field and stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends. I recently started writing a blog on strategic analysis in business, attracting potential clients and demonstrating my expertise."Your passions can be a powerful tool for forging connections, acquiring knowledge, and ultimately reaching your career goals.

2 Find relevant groups and events
The next step is to find groups and events that match your hobbies and your industry. You can use platforms like Meetup, Eventbrite, Facebook, or LinkedIn to search for local or virtual gatherings that cater to your interests. For example, if you're a writer who likes to read books, you might want to attend a book club, a literary festival, or a workshop, where you can meet other writers, editors, publishers, and readers. Or if you're a software developer who likes to code, you might want to join a hackathon, a coding challenge, or a webinar, where you can meet other developers, mentors, employers, and clients.

3 Engage and network
The final step is to engage and network with the people you meet through your hobbies. You can do this by being friendly, curious, and helpful. For example, if you're a photographer who likes to travel, you might want to share your photos, stories, and tips with other travelers, bloggers, or influencers, who might appreciate your work, give you referrals, or collaborate with you. Or if you're a marketer who likes to cook, you might want to offer your services, advice, or feedback to other chefs, restaurateurs, or foodies, who might need your expertise, hire you, or recommend you.
By using your hobbies to build your professional network, you can not only have fun and learn new things, but also showcase your skills and personality, and create opportunities for your career. You never know who you might meet or what you might discover through your passions and interests.

For me, my hobbies have always been a way to enhance my engagement with people. For example I used to read books since early childhood. So joining in group discussions with people who love books used to be that much easier. Later when I grew up, I have developed interest in volunteering. Now that really opened me a new horizon of collaboration and associating with people. Standing on platforms which required volunteers for both online and offline activities has expanded my network tremendously in the past few years. The key is to first identify your skills, and then look for the spaces where you can showcase your talents, at the same time working deliberately for improvement of your performance & growth. Interestingly it works really good.
